A fire detection system in the Port Hills has been expanded to include four new locations near Summit Road. This expansion is a joint effort between the Christchurch City Council, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), and technology partner Attentis.

The new sensor sites are located at Worsley’s Road, Sign of the Kiwi, Sugarloaf, and Bridle Path. These add to the existing sensors at the Christchurch Adventure Park, Lyttelton’s Naval Point, and Waitākiri Bottle Lake Forest Park. The network now comprises 15 sensors in total.

These sensors utilize advanced technology to collect data on air pollution, smoke, wind speed and direction, and thermal imaging. The collected data is meant to provide emergency services with instant notifications improving emergency responsiveness.

The expansion increases the system’s coverage and data collection capacity, this is helpful for early fire Risk-detection.

Data from the sensor network is publicly available online, allowing residents to use the collected data.
