New Feature Allows WhatsApp Users to Interact with ChatGPT

Anyone using WhatsApp can now interact with ChatGPT using their voice and by uploading images to submit queries to the AI chatbot. This new feature is part of an update to the service, allowing users to contact the chatbot on a dedicated phone number, 1-800-242-8478.

The update aims to make ChatGPT more accessible to people around the world, particularly those with limited access to high-speed data. Existing OpenAI account holders can already use the chatbot on its dedicated app and website, but the new feature on WhatsApp provides a familiar channel for users to try out the AI tool.

As part of the update, OpenAI is also allowing existing ChatGPT subscribers to link their account to WhatsApp, giving them additional usage on the messaging platform. This move is part of the company’s efforts to increase its revenue streams and keep investors happy, as WhatsApp has around two billion monthly active users worldwide.

OpenAI has expanded its subscriber options in recent months, including launching a subscription tier to access the latest AI models. However, the company is facing a new challenge from China-based DeepSeek, which claims to have developed AI models capable of matching ChatGPT’s competence for a fraction of the cost.

DeepSeek’s emergence has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, with US tech stocks and wider markets tumbling as the long-held view that developing cutting-edge AI was a multi-billion dollar investment was upended.
