Motorola and Samsung continue their competition in the flip phone market. Upcoming models, the Razr Plus (2025) and Galaxy Z Flip 7, are expected to be very similar in capabilities, making the choice between them potentially difficult for consumers.
Motorola is anticipated to continue its focus on style for the Razr Plus (2025). Leaked images suggest options like red vegan leather with stitching and a wood finish. The device will likely maintain IPX8 water resistance but may still lack dust resistance. Improvements to the hinge are also possible. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to keep its familiar flat aluminum edges and solid construction. Information suggests a larger 4-inch cover screen, similar to Motorola’s, and potentially a slimmer overall design. Samsung may also improve the hinge to reduce the visibility of the screen crease and retain Gorilla Glass protection.
The Razr Plus (2025) is likely to retain its 6.9-inch main display with a 165Hz refresh rate and a 4-inch cover screen also featuring a 165Hz refresh rate. Samsung is rumored to slightly increase the Z Flip 7’s main display to 6.85 inches. More significantly, the cover screen is expected to grow to 4 inches, matching the Razr, although possibly with a lower 60Hz or 120Hz refresh rate. Both phones are expected to use side-mounted fingerprint sensors and offer face unlock.
Performance may become a closer contest this year. The Razr Plus (2025) is rumored to feature Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and potentially up to 18 GB of RAM. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is also expected to use either the Snapdragon 8 Elite or Samsung’s own Exynos 2500 chip, potentially paired with 12 GB of RAM. This could result in similar performance levels between the two phones.
Regarding software, Samsung maintains an advantage with features like Galaxy AI and promising up to seven years of OS updates. Motorola is expected to introduce new Moto AI features but will likely offer fewer years of software updates, possibly four. Both phones are expected to launch with Android 15.
In the camera department, the Razr Plus (2025) is predicted to have a dual-camera system with a 50-megapixel main sensor and a 50-megapixel telephoto lens offering 2x zoom. A 32-megapixel front camera is also expected. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 will likely continue using a 50-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, along with a 10-megapixel front camera. A significant difference remains the lack of an ultra-wide camera on the Motorola phone.
Motorola may slightly increase the battery capacity in the Razr Plus (2025) to 4,275 mAh and is expected to keep its fast 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. Samsung might equip the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with a slightly larger 4,300 mAh battery but is expected to maintain slower 25W wired charging while continuing to support wireless charging.
The upcoming Motorola Razr Plus (2025) appears ready to challenge Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series more closely, particularly in processing power and charging speed. Samsung, however, is expected to counter with upgrades like a larger cover screen, a less noticeable crease, and its longer software update policy. The final choice for consumers may depend on priorities such as design, charging speed, camera setup, or long-term software support. The next year looks promising for flip phone buyers.
