Meta to Use EU Posts for AI Training
Tech company Meta has started using posts from Facebook and Instagram users in Germany and other European Union countries to improve its artificial intelligence technology, called Meta AI. This change comes after the deadline for users to stop their data from being used passed.
The company plans to look at all public information shared by adult users across the EU. This information will be used to train its AI models, unless users had actively said they did not want their data used.
A court in Germany recently rejected a complaint against Meta by a consumer protection group. The group had claimed Meta was breaking EU data rules. The court decided that Meta’s use of data is for a valid reason that could not be met in a way that was less involved. The court also pointed out that Meta had promised to remove private details like names, phone numbers, and account information.
Private chats on WhatsApp are not included because they are encrypted. However, talks users have with Meta’s AI assistant are seen as public and might be used for training the AI.
