Oppo 2024 Sustainability Report

OPPO, one of the leading global smartphone brands, has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, celebrating its commitment to sustainability on World Environment Day. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the company has published an annual sustainability report. OPPO, which has operations in over 70 countries and regions, has made significant progress in reducing its carbon emissions, achieving its peak carbon emissions in 2022—two years earlier than its original climate target.

In its 2024 report, OPPO highlights its continued dedication to building a more sustainable and inclusive future. The company focuses on five key areas: virtuous innovation, environmental protection, ecosystem engagement, operations and compliance, and employee welfare. With the company’s brand renewal under the slogan “Make Your Moment,” OPPO aims to propel sustainability forward by advancing green innovation and promoting responsible technology.

OPPO’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions is central to its sustainability efforts. The company had previously set a goal to peak its carbon emissions by 2024 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In 2024, OPPO reported a 3.2% year-on-year reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the equivalent of the annual sequestration capacity of approximately 514,320 mature trees. This reduction was largely driven by improved operational efficiencies and the company’s commitment to its supply chain partners. OPPO also reduced Scope 3 emissions by 9.3% compared to the previous year.

In addition to these efforts, OPPO has been enhancing the environmental sustainability of its products. The company has adopted green management practices across the lifecycle of its devices. In 2024, OPPO introduced lightweight packaging designs across its entire smartphone product range, resulting in a reduction of paper consumption by 10 tons per million units, which is equivalent to saving around 200 trees. OPPO has also increased the proportion of recycled materials in its packaging, particularly in Europe, where the recycled content in mobile phone box packaging has risen from 45% to 55%.

OPPO’s focus on sustainability extends beyond its carbon emissions and packaging. The company has incorporated innovative engineering solutions into its products to improve their durability. For example, the OPPO A3 Pro features a Damage-proof 360° Armour Body, which enhances the phone’s resistance to drops and boosts its everyday durability. Through these initiatives, OPPO aims to create longer-lasting products while reducing waste and environmental impact.

Innovation continues to be a driving force behind OPPO’s strategy. With over 113,000 patent applications, 91% of which are invention patents, OPPO prioritizes the development of technology that benefits users while addressing global challenges. In line with its brand mission, “Technology for Mankind, Kindness for the World,” OPPO seeks to make technology accessible to all. One of the company’s key initiatives is the integration of AI features across its smartphone product range. In 2024, OPPO introduced more than 100 AI features that have reached over 50 million users worldwide. These features include real-time speech-to-text translation, content magnification, and adaptive color correction, all of which contribute to improving accessibility for users with hearing or visual impairments.

Health and wellness have also become a focus area for OPPO’s innovations. The company’s smartwatches, equipped with AI-powered health features, monitor vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and sleep. The “Health Insights” feature provides users with personalized health assessments based on real-time sensor data. OPPO has made significant strides in health management, particularly with its AI-powered blood pressure classification algorithm, which provides continuous, unobtrusive hypertension risk assessments. This innovation is part of what OPPO claims to be the world’s largest real-world study on unobtrusive blood pressure risk prediction.

Beyond its technological advancements, OPPO is also actively engaging with local communities through various corporate social responsibility initiatives. In 2024, the company donated more than 450 million RMB to support social and public welfare projects. These initiatives focus on areas such as environmental conservation, cultural preservation, sports, and education. OPPO’s partnership with Discovery Channel led to the launch of the “Culture in a Shot Initiative,” which uses imaging technology to highlight cultural diversity. The initiative’s 2024 theme, “Portraits of Legacy,” focuses on celebrating intangible cultural heritage through portraits and stories of festivals and celebrations across 15 countries. OPPO’s collaboration with UNESCO also saw the donation of 1,000 OPPO tablets to support youth education and cultural development in Africa and Asia.

In the realm of sports, OPPO has been a key supporter of football culture through its partnership with UEFA Champions League. The company has contributed to the development of grassroots football by funding pitch renovations, providing football equipment, and offering professional training courses. OPPO’s initiatives have supported young footballers in countries such as Brazil, Egypt, and Mexico, helping them to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.

Looking to the future, OPPO remains committed to advancing sustainable development and making a positive impact on the world. The company’s continued focus on technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility is designed to create a resilient technological ecosystem in collaboration with its global partners. As it progresses on its sustainability journey, OPPO aims to create meaningful change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
