Perplexity has officially released its AI-powered browser, Comet, making it available for free download on desktop worldwide. The browser had previously been offered only to a limited user group through a waitlist, with early access tied to a high-priced subscription plan. This full public release marks a significant step in opening AI-powered internet browsing to a wider audience without upfront costs.

Comet integrates a search-focused personal AI assistant with traditional web browsing features in a single platform. Users benefit from asking more questions and receiving clear, helpful answers while browsing. The AI assistant is available in every new tab to support research, meetings, coding, e-commerce, and other online tasks. This approach aims to shift the internet experience from passive consumption toward curiosity-driven engagement and productivity.

Perplexity also introduced several AI upgrades alongside the browser, including Background Assistants. These assistants work asynchronously to complete various tasks, allowing users to concentrate on higher priority activities without distractions. For paying subscribers of Comet’s Max plan, an Email Assistant is available that automates inbox management, including scheduling, researching, and drafting email replies. This feature enhances workflow efficiency for professional users.

The company announced plans to launch a mobile version of Comet soon. This mobile app will reportedly be designed with phone-specific AI features and voice technology to make AI assistance widely accessible across devices. It is expected to support both Android and iOS platforms, further expanding the reach of their AI browsing ecosystem.

In tandem with technology innovations, Perplexity is emphasizing the importance of quality content on the internet. To address this, it created Comet Plus, a curated news service offering premium content from established publishers. Subscribers to Perplexity Pro or Max plans will have access to news from global outlets like CNN, The Washington Post, and Le Monde, among others. The Comet Plus service is also available for a lower subscription fee for users without a Perplexity plan. This effort promotes trustworthy journalism as a foundation for an improved online experience.

Perplexity’s broader ambitions include acquiring rival browsers and expanding their technology portfolio. During 2025, the company reportedly pursued bids to acquire browsers such as Brave and DuckDuckGo while also making a notable, though likely symbolic, offer for Google Chrome.
