OpenAI Reportedly Developing Smart Speaker for 2027

OpenAI is building a family of AI-powered consumer devices with a dedicated team of more than 200 people working on the project. The product lineup includes a smart speaker, smart glasses, and a possible smart lamp. The development effort signals a major strategic shift for the company as it moves beyond software into physical hardware.
The smart speaker is the first device expected to reach the market. It will be priced between $200 and $300 and will include a built-in camera capable of capturing information about users and their environment. The device is not expected to ship before February 2027.
Smart glasses are also in development but are not projected to reach mass production until 2028. No pricing details or product specifications for the glasses have been made public.
OpenAI’s entry into hardware follows its $6.5 billion acquisition of io Products, a startup co-founded by Jony Ive, who previously served as chief design officer at Apple. The acquisition was intended to accelerate OpenAI’s presence in the consumer hardware market, particularly in the growing segments of physical AI and augmented reality.
The move places OpenAI in competition with Meta, which has already reported strong commercial performance from its Ray-Ban smart glasses. Those glasses allow users to capture photos and video and stream content using integrated cameras. Apple and Google are also reported to be working on their own smart glasses products, making the segment increasingly competitive.
