Coursera joins ChatGPT to expand AI learning access in Malaysia

Coursera-OpenAI

Coursera, a global online learning platform, has become one of the first-generation applications integrated into ChatGPT, as announced during OpenAI’s DevDay. This marks the first time an online learning platform has been embedded directly within ChatGPT, enhancing access to trusted educational content for hundreds of millions of users worldwide, including in Malaysia where enrollment in Generative AI courses has increased by 183% year-over-year.

ChatGPT, used weekly by hundreds of millions, is increasingly popular for learning. Through this integration, Malaysian users can now access Coursera videos and information directly within ChatGPT conversations, turning everyday interactions into educational opportunities. Users can invoke the Coursera app by asking for it by name, and ChatGPT will also suggest Coursera content when relevant.

This collaboration highlights the rising demand in Malaysia for job-relevant AI skills, aligned with national strategies such as the National AI Roadmap 2021–2025 and the AI Talent Roadmap 2024–2030. Among Malaysian learners, popular Generative AI courses include offerings from Google, DeepLearning.AI, and IBM. The adoption of Generative AI learning spans generations, led by Millennials at 58%, followed by GenX, GenZ, and Boomers.

Built on OpenAI’s Apps SDK, the Coursera app within ChatGPT aims to make high-quality education more discoverable and accessible, helping users move efficiently from initial interest to obtaining credentials. The app is currently available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the EU, including those in Malaysia, across various subscription plans. The initial interface is in English, with subtitles and dubbing offered in select languages.
